When I was in middle school, I always got made fun of for how bad my teeth looked. I was always very self-conscious about smiling and talking, with my teeth showing too much. This led to me never smiling with my teeth showing. I tried subtly covering my mouth when eating and talking, never having my mouth open enough for my teeth to be seen. I kept begging my parents to let me get braces so that way I would not have to be embarrassed anymore. Then maybe the people I went to school with would stop making fun of me for my teeth. Finally, my parents told me they would let me get braces, but I would have to wait a few more years for my older sister to be done with her braces first because we could not afford both of us to have braces at the same time. I was devastated that I had to go through all of middle school with my teeth looking terrible. Plus, I was mad at my sister because she didn’t even look bad before she got Top McKinney Orthodontics braces, and I did!

In high school, my sister finally got her braces off, and I made sure to remind my parents that she no longer had braces every single chance I had. They just kept telling me, “when I have the money,” and I started to think they just wanted people to think I was an ugly girl with an ugly smile forever.

That was until finally; we met with Dr. Stephanie Crise at Smiles Hollywood Orthodontics. She was so charismatic and incredibly accommodating with my family and me. She helped my parents come up with a financial plan that would not hurt them and a plan that would only have me in braces for a little less than two years! My sister had gone to a different orthodontic office, and she had braces on for over three years. Dr. Crise was very detailed on what her plan for my time in braces would look like. She kept me in the loop, which made my experience so much easier. The office was such a fun place for me to be, so I never dreaded going to my Top McKinney Orthodontics appointments because I would just play the fun arcade games, or sometimes, I would get there extra early to have enough time to sit in the movie room.

Usually, you hear about all of these people’s horror stories and experiences while having Top McKinney Orthodontics braces, but I loved it. Even though after my appointments, my teeth would be sore for a little while, so I had to eat only soft foods; it was still exciting to know that the soreness meant my teeth were moving more and more toward perfection. I started noticing that my top canine teeth were aligned with the rest of my teeth instead of being at the very top of my gums. One day, I noticed the gap between my top front teeth was completely gone! I also noticed I cleaned my teeth better because I was more motivated to brush my teeth multiple times a day. I also flossed every single night because braces can cause food to get stuck between your teeth more easily. I always used mouthwash because I wanted my teeth to be as white as possible since I was starting to smile with my teeth showing more often. I was even being told I looked really pretty with braces.

Eighteen months later, I got my braces off! It took a little bit of time to get adjusted to my new look, and at first; I thought my teeth were huge! My teeth felt very smooth, slimy, and different. I ate popcorn for the first time without being scared of messing up my teeth and brackets. And most of all, I could not stop smiling and looking at my teeth in the mirror! It was amazing; my confidence was through the roof. I was telling all my friends and family, and I was posting it everywhere I could. And the best part… it was right before school pictures!

Dr. Stephanie Crise was very adamant about wearing my retainer and how important it was to wear it every single night before bed. She made it clear to me that going forward, if I wanted to keep my brand new smile beautiful, then I needed to make sure always to put my retainer in before bed. It has been 3 years since I got my braces off, and I still wear my retainer to this day. If you just make it part of your morning and night routine, it becomes instinct to wear your Top McKinney Orthodontics retainer, and you won’t even think twice about it. At night, I brush my teeth, floss, and use mouthwash, then I put my retainer in since it is right next to my toothbrush. I take it out, clean it off and put it back into the case in the morning. Then I brush my teeth. Wearing your retainer adds an extra 5 seconds to your nightly routine, and maybe an extra 30 seconds to your morning routine. It also saves you so much money if you wear your retainer because you won’t have to worry about your teeth shifting again and possibly needing orthodontic treatment again! The most important thing your retainer will do for you is boost your confidence! With your teeth always being straight, you will always have that confident Hollywood Smile. I love mine!
